One-Dollar Freeze

When I walked back to the terminal in Cork after I returned the car, pulling my suitcase behind me, I suddenly remembered that this whole trip started with just one dollar. It felt a bit unreal. A few days earlier I was at home finishing a PPT for work. My head was tired and I still had to book a car in Cork for my business meetings. I opened QEEQ and chose an Opel Insignia from Enterprise. Manual, four doors, enough space for my files and suit bag. At the payment step I felt a bit nervous. My credit card had a lot of business expenses on it and I did not want to add a big charge at once. Then I saw the option called One-Dollar Freeze. It said I only needed to pay 1 dollar first to lock the car and the rest would be charged automatically before the rental started. I stared at that line for a while to make sure there was no interest and no strange fees. My chest felt lighter and I clicked confirm. It felt like I could “secure the car first and think later”. A little later I flew from London to Ireland. When I landed and turned on my phone, I saw the charge had gone through smoothly. No extra cost and the amount was exactly what I expected. My card limit still looked fine. I felt calm because I did not need to stand at the airport counter doing math with my card in my hand. I walked to the Enterprise counter and showed the staff my booking. They checked my details and handed me the keys. I pulled my suitcase to the parking lot. The silver Opel Insignia was in the middle of a row of cars. The body was clean and the trunk could fit my cabin suitcase and laptop bag just right. During the two days I drove between meeting spots in Cork I almost forgot about the payment part. There was no strange extra charge and no sudden big bill. I only opened my phone now and then to look at my statement and everything looked normal. For someone like me who flies a lot for work, this way of paying 1 dollar first and not putting a big pressure on my credit card fits me very well. After I dropped off the car and sat in the waiting area at the airport, I thought about the whole thing. It started with just one dollar and ended with a smooth trip in Cork. The whole process felt simple and steady.
